Australia Day - January 26

G'day Again

Communities all around Australia are gearing up for our Australia Day celebrations on Thursday. All sorts of great things happen on January 26: just about every community names at least one Australian of The Year - senior, junior, sportsman/woman/person, etc. This is a great honour for everyone who receives recognition of their contributions to the betterment of their community, and ultimately, our nation.

Another great activity is the welcoming of our new citizens, people who've come Down Under and have not only decided to stay here, but to become a part of our great nation by taking up Australian citizenship. As an Aussie by birth, it's great to be able to welcome everyone who becomes an Aussie by choice.

And so, on Thursday morning, I'll be doing just this. I've been invited to take part in our Echuca Australia Day Celebrations and Citizenship Ceremony by presenting my new poem, 'Welcome to Australia'. I reckon I'm just about as excited as our new Aussies!

After our Australia Day Brekky at Echuca's beautiful Aquatic Reserve, I'm heading out to Barmah on the banks of The Murray River for their Australia Day Picnic. If you're nearby, why not drop in?

There'll be some great Australian Bush Poetry happening with a supervised Open Microphone for kids of all ages who'd like to take part in singing some of our great Aussie songs or reading/presenting some of our well known traditional Australian Bush Poetry.

Hope to see you there, it'll be heaps of fun.

Cheerio for now, Nerelie
