Mountain Cattlemen's Gathering & Bush Poetry Competition

G'day again,

We spent last weekend camping at Merrijig near Mansfield, nestled in the foothills of Victoria's High Country.  What a beautiful little place this was, situated near the Delatite River and its stunning river valley, close to Mt Timbertop.

As you can imagine the air was crisp, clean and clear, with cool nights, gorgeous days and a brisk wind that sometimes even the locals commented about.

Waking up to magpie songs near a stand of striking old river red gums has to be one of life's great moments - and this is freely available to anyone with a tent, swag, 4WD, or like us a great little go anywhere trailer and tarp. You don't have to go to a serviced caravan park or camp ground, and you don't have to be restricted by the  rules, regulations and bureaucracy of national parks, there's plenty of great places for responsible people if you know where to go and how to behave.

My new poem, The Spirits of The Mountain Cattlemen, received The Jack Treasure Award in the 2012 Don Kneebone Mountain Heritage Awards and also won The Peter McCormack Bush Laureate Award.

On a misty Alpine morning, when the air is fresh and damp
the spirit of a cattleman might drift into your camp
As you rise to stir the embers and boil the billy for your tea
you might somehow sense his presence or his form you'll almost see

Of course there's a bit more to the poem than that, but I hope you enjoyed reading the first stanza.

Cheerio
